I Wouldn’t Change A Thing: 5 Ways To Handle Burnout
Intro
2024 has been a wild time in multiple ways & I think many people are experiencing some level of burnout as we close the year out. There’s this quote I love about burnout from Michael Gunger that summarizes the feeling perfectly: “Burnout is what happens when you try to avoid being human for too long." Overall I feel grateful for the position I’m in & opportunities I have. But anyone who knows me personally can attest to how much work I do on a 24/7 basis lol. Naturally, anyone on a busy schedule needs to take breaks & practice some level of self-care when possible.
And that’s something that is always going to look unique & different for everyone. Whether it’s my music or my experience working with different companies in the music industry, all of these paths come with a journey full of stress, hard work, learning & falling down sometimes along the way. Despite it all, I’m lucky enough to have gotten so many opportunities & thankful that my personal career is pretty solid. We’re all human and are allowed to complain, but realistically I probably wouldn’t change a thing. Here’s a list of practices I do though on days when I have some free time or need a break:
Submit To The Burnout
The first thing I do is acknowledge the feeling the moment I notice it. It’s easier said than done, but the feeling itself is gonna be hard to completely ignore anyway.
Meditation
Me & Dawn have been pretty consistent with taking a few minutes to meditate & be in the moment. Clears the mind
Walks
This is pretty obvious & common. I probably don’t do this as much these days as I should lmao but still one of the best daily practices anyone can do. I been smoking a little less these days, but that’s always a perfect combo.
Write
Depending on whether I’m physically exhausted or just mentally exhausted, I might use the feeling as inspiration for writing. I’ll never forget in December 2020 I wrote the song Shinigami Eyes while I was down bad & in a deep depression. Music really is just alchemy though, as in this example, I transferred that exhausted feeling into a piece of art that’s one of my most listened to.
Connect With Inner Child
When I say this, I kinda just mean spending my time selfishly. That could be spending the day playing 2K/PokéMon. I might rewatch my favorite shows, although I watch YouTube 90% of the time these days. Buy some candy, order food, etc.
